Frequently Asked Questions

1. What exactly are you selling?

We are selling a detailed "blueprint style" of drawings that you can use to build a simple, low cost, lightweight portable riser system.

2. I have a few heavy weight members, Are they strong enough for these members?

A. Yes. the all wood folding portable risers are very strong and the Light weight foam risers are even more secure. Imagine if you will driving down the road and passing a business that sell boats. You notice that the boats are actually setting on big white blocks. As heavy as these big boats are, they are sitting on a block of Polystyrene foam. The same thing we use in the lightweight portable risers. Very strong and very secure.

3. Can we still do choreography on these risers?

A. Yes. But keep in mind that they are not a continuous flat surface, therefore choreography should be limited to moves that can be completed in a given rectangular space.

4. Since I am NOT buying a pre-manufactured riser. Just how hard are they to build?

I have built several sets of risers for local chapters including the chapter I direct, and I did it in my drive way with tools that any handy-person would have in their home shop. If I had more time I’d build them and send out a finished product. But Barbershopping to me is not just a hobby, it’s a way of life, so I do not have time to be the manufacturer as well.

I have made the drawings easy to read so that anyone familiar with common woodworking tools can assemble their own set of risers.

5. How much do you charge for a set of plans and what is included in your package?

A. I am asking for a $ 25.00 donation for the construction packet.

Included in the packet are drawings for four types of portable risers.

The “All Wood Folding Riser “ designed not only for its portable aspects but is also ideal where storage is a problem. They will fold down flat for storage and ease of handing. There are two versions of this riser.

“The Light weight Foam Riser “ is our most popular style. Both Foam Options are lightweight but does not fold flat. The important thing in building these is how they need to be supported at the handle and corner areas.

We detail which paint works best and even provide a layout of how many riser parts you can get from the 4’ x 8’ panels. And to top off the package I’ve included a page on how to position the risers for the average, small, three row chorus.

6. Are there any restrictions to buying these plans or using these risers?

A. No. But it would be very nice if you didn’t pass on the drawings to another chapter or friend but instead simply pass on the wed page information so they can check them out on their own.

It is important to know that you are only buying the riser designs. It is your responsibility to ensure that they are safely built. Any injuries resulting from poor construction is each chapter's liability.
